Norwegian officials condemn Sudan conflict, call for immediate action

April 14, 2024 (OSLO) – The Norwegian Minister of International Development, Anne Beatle Tvinnereim and her Foreign Affairs counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, expressed concerns over the devastating impact of a year of conflict in Sudan.

The ministers, in a joint statement issued on Monday, emphasized the urgent need for intervention to alleviate the immense suffering endured by the Sudanese people as April 15 marks the grim anniversary of the war’s outbreak.

The statement underscores the staggering human toll of the conflict, with thousands dead or injured and over one-fifth of Sudan’s population forcibly displaced, constituting the world’s largest displacement crisis.

Moreover, the dire humanitarian situation is exacerbated by rampant hunger, malnutrition, and disease, with millions facing acute food insecurity and millions more on the brink of famine.

Norway vehemently condemns the gross violations of international humanitarian and human rights law committed by both parties to the conflict, including reports of widespread conflict-related sexual violence, noted the statement.

The ministers stressed the imperative of holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring justice for the victims.

Emphasizing the futility of a military solution, Norway advocates for a comprehensive and inclusive political process led by a civilian government, rooted in democratic principles.

Such a process, they argued, is essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in Sudan, with meaningful participation from women and youth.

Despite the bleak reality, however, the ministers highlighted glimpses of hope, acknowledging the resilience of Sudanese civil society and grassroots organizations in mitigating the war’s impact.

They commended the bravery and initiative of local emergency response efforts and youth networks in providing crucial humanitarian aid amid challenges.

Norway also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the Sudanese people’s aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice, as evidenced by the 2018-2019 Revolution.

The ministers pledged continued support for Sudan’s transition towards a brighter future, standing firmly against the spectre of authoritarianism.

The statement said Norway extends a hand of solidarity to Sudan, underscoring the belief that from the depths of the current crisis, a new and better Sudan can emerge, with sustained international collaboration and determination.
