The Governor of Central Equatoria State (CES), Emmanuel Adil, redirected state officials to remove unnecessary roadblocks within the state territory.
The governor issued the directives during an emergency security sharing that revolved around issues of fundamental concern confronting the locals in the area.
Adil’s directives came after traders decried exorbitant informal charges at the illegal roadblocks along the roads heading to the capital, Juba.
According to the statement issued by the Governors Press Unit, the governor, while on his visit to Yei River County, stated that only official checkpoints would be left while all unnecessary roadblocks had to be closed down.
“Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has redirected for the immediate removal of the illegally erected checkpoints in the Greater Yei area,” the statement read.
Adil, who was conducting a security review in the area, said the county was generally peaceful.
He called on the Yei residents to spread peace as the country moves closer to the election.
Adil stated that peace is important for the government’s development activities to be implemented smoothly.
In a separate interview with the media, the Commissioner of Yei River County, Aggrey Cyrus Kanyikwa, called on the security officials within the county to ensure all the unnecessary roadblocks are removed as instructed by the state governor.
According to the statement seen by The City Review, the commissioner called for the removal of the roadblocks, adding that it would reduce the unnecessary collection of money from the drivers.
“The commissioner of Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, Aggrey Cyrus Kanyiwa, gives out a strong local order for the removal of all checkpoints and roadblocks all over Yei River County with the effect of April 11, 2024, as an order from H.E. Governor Emmanuel Adil Antony,” the statement read.
Last year, it was reported that youth in Yei River County called on the Central Equatoria State government to remove all illegal roadblocks along the Juba-Yei Road that were hampering movement and business.
The Chairperson of the Yei River County Youth Association, Johnson Poru, made the call during a meeting with Governor Adil in Yei Town.
“I am requesting the government of Central Equatoria to intervene to see that these checkpoints are removed so that we can boost trade,” Poru told journalists after the meeting.
The Central Equatoria state issued several directives for the removal of checkpoints with the hope of ensuring the smooth movement of people and goods.
