TheExecutive Director for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), Edmund Yakani, called on the South Sudan government to organise a National Commercial Banks conference to discuss the current economic situation.
According to the statement seen by The City Review, Yakani said President Kiir’s speech has to be actualized and the lawmakers should support economic recovery models, including the involvement of all stakeholders.
He said the involvement of the domestic banks would help them to display and play a role in intervening in the current economic crisis.
“There is a need to conduct a national commercial bank conference that is intended to strengthen and empower our national domestic commercial banks,” Yakani said.
He claimed that the national banks have been forgotten and there is a need to closely involve them to advise the government on how to tackle inflation and local currency depreciations.
“Our national domestic commercial banks are completely forgotten players in the economic sector for strengthening the valve of SSP against US dollars,” he said.
“We wish to see that the country should hold a national domestic bank conference to discuss the role of the national commercial bank in strengthening the currency through engaging in banking service,” he added.
He appealed to the lawmakers to advocate and push the executive to ensure that the agricultural banks are revived and funded to fully play their role of supporting other agricultural institutions and groups.
Yakani argued that the effective funding of agricultural banks is part of an effective and practical way of putting President Salva Kiir’s call for investment into reality.
He added that the country cannot improve its economy without investing in agriculture and supporting local farmers.
“We do not want to see the usual behaviours where the speech of the president is discussed and is forgotten immediately after the end of the session,” he said.
He vowed that the civil society would remain committed to ensuring that leaders implement their policies in the interest of the people of South Sudan.
“As civil society, we take responsibility for providing oversight observation to ensure that our lawmakers work hard and direct effective implementation of country’s policies,” he said.
Recently, the National Assembly, in its first 2024 sitting, tabled the speech of President Salva Kiir before a new committee headed by Deng Ayuel to be scrutinised so that it becomes a policy document of the government.
