US envoy warns of rising atrocities in Darfur

The United States Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, warned of further consequences from the escalating hostilities in El Fasher, north of Darfur.

In a statement obtained by The City Review on Sunday, Perriello said the citizens face dangers, stressing that the majority are in desperate need of humanitarian aid.

“The continued fighting in El Fasher is a humanitarian catastrophe in the making,” Perriello said.

He added, “These innocent people have already lost their homes and are struggling to survive. Further displacement would be devastating.”

He appealed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end the siege of El Fasher.

Perriello urged all parties involved, including the RSF, Sudanese army, allied fighters, and any other armed forces, to comply with international law and prioritise civilian safety.

Perriello made this comment in response to recent RSF attacks on Zaghawa-populated settlements in western El Fasher.

He emphasised that any offensive action would only exacerbate the violence and called on all parties to de-escalate tensions and work towards a resolution.

The deliberate assault on the Zaghawa raises major fears about an escalating war.

This is the second ethnic community that the RSF and Arab-allied militias have attacked in recent months.
