The National Elections Commission will begin voter registration in June 2024 as it embarks on its preparations for the forthcoming elections.

Addressing journalists at the Pyramid Hotel on Tuesday, the chairperson of the National Election Commission (NEC), Prof Abednego Akok, said the law requires the commission to begin registration six months before the election period, which makes June the ideal month.

“We are targeting the registration of voters to take place in June because the law says the registration must begin six months before election time,” Akok said.

Akok further stated that the commission had received a small budget for pre-election activities, although he did not provide the figure of the amount.

He said the media would be briefed on the amount allocated for such activities after the accountant had accessed the figures from the bank.

“What has been released or what has been received is a very small sum of money to cover the pre-election activities,” he said, adding that it would take $230 million to effectively prepare for the polls, based on its budgetary estimates.

Earlier this week, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) faulted the government for partially releasing funds to the electoral bodies. The Deputy Chairperson of SPLM-IO, Oyet Nathaniel, lashed at the executive in a statement where he pointed out that it only released funding for the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Political Parties Council (PPC), leaving other vital bodies like the National Constitution Review Commission and the National Bureau of Statistics whose roles are equally vital for the process.

Oyet said the chairperson of the PPC had been quoted by a section of the media, testifying that his organisation had received funding.
